but what if we split the difference?"

Sleep or rather what happens when you don't get it...... from Conditioning Research

Intermittent-Sprint Performance and Muscle Glycogen Following 30 H Sleep Deprivation.

Looks like missing a night's sleep:
  • reduced muscle glycogen levels
  • the force that could be applied through the quads
  • the activation of the quads
  • worsened sprint performance
  • worsened mood
CONCLUSION: Sleep loss and associated reductions in muscle glycogen and perceptual stress reduced sprint performance and slowed pacing strategies during intermittent-sprint exercise for male team-sport athletes.

Pulling late nights, or an all-nighter, feels like a badge of honor you can wear at some jobs. But given the impact of sleeplessness on work, at least one researcher considers it like showing up at work loaded.

Less sleep less brain? via Conditioning Research
"We show, for the first time, that insomnia patients have lower grey matter density in brain regions involved in the evaluation of the pleasantness of stimuli, as well as in regions related to the brain's 'resting state'. The more severe the sleeping problems of insomniacs, the less grey matter density they have in the region involved in pleasantness evaluation, which may also be important for the recognition of optimal comfort to fall asleep," explained Altena. She added, "Our group previously showed that insomniacs have difficulties with recognizing optimal comfort. These findings urge further investigation into the definition of subtypes of insomnia and their causal factors, for which we have now initiated the Netherlands Sleep Registry."

Sleep - from Robb Wolf

Saturday, August 29, 2009

Sleep, dammit!

Yeah, you know you're not getting enough.

I've posted here before about things like Cumulative Cognitive Dysfunction.
Sound scary? Well it should. This is what happens to ALL of us when we don't get enough sleep on a regular basis. And it's sneaky too. Because it's your cognitive ability that's being impaired, you don't notice anything's wrong. But it is.

Getting less than seven hours a night? Congratulations! You now have a three times higher risk of getting a cold than if you're getting eight hours or more. And how about this: in an article published in Sleep, the team concluded that every lost hour of sleep is associated with a discrete increase in BMI. Read more in The Healing Power of Sleep.
